Downtown Open House - May 13th

On Saturday, May 13th from 10 AM - 5 PM, the Village will be taking part in the 2nd annual Wisconsin Downtown Open House, joining 20 other communities around the state.  The Village, in partnership with community partners, will be offering free access to the Chalet of the Golden Fleece Museum, the Swiss Historical Village, a downtown walking tour, and much more.  For more information, click HERE!

Spring Residential Clean-up

Spring Clean-Up Day will be held on two non-consecutive Fridays with the Village being divided into two zones.  Zone A will be picked up on Friday, May 5, 2017 and Zone B on Friday, May 19, 2017.  Click HERE to view the map detailing the two zones.  At this time the contractor WILL pick up furniture, and other items not considered being normal residential garbage, refuse or recyclables.   This pick up DOES NOT include tires, e-waste (i.e. TVs, VCRs, computer equipment), medication, remodeling or construction materials.

Large appliances (i.e. stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, etc.) will only be picked up on Friday, May 19, 2017.  Pick-up of large appliances on this day will require the purchase of an appliance sticker, which can be purchased at the Village Clerk's Office.

Refrigerator & Freezer Recycling

Focus on Energy is offering FREE refrigerator and freezer recycling and a $35 reward per appliance recycled (limit 2).  To qualify for the program, your units must be in working condition and must be 10 - 30 cubic feet in size (mini fridges are ineligible).  Schedule your FREE appliance pick up at or at 1-800-354-1898.

Open Book and Board of Review

Open Book will be held on May 11, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on May 15, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Open Book allows property owners who wish to dispute their assessment a time to meet with the assessor to discuss concerns they may have on the assessment of their property.  If the property owner is unable to resolve their concerns with the Assessor at Open Book, they have the option of appearing at the Board of Review. Board of Review is scheduled for May 31, 2017 at 5 p.m. at the Village Hall Boardroom, 319 2nd Street, New Glarus, WI  53574.  Anyone wishing to file an appeal on their property assessment and appear at the Board of Review must provide the Board of Review Clerk, Lynne Erb written or oral notice of your intent, under state law (sec. 70.47(7)(a), Wis. Stats.).  They must also complete the entire Object to Real (or Personal) Property Assessment.

Curbside Brush Pickup to Start in April

Brush and branches for curbside pickup should be placed curbside by the first day of each month from April through October for pick up by the Village.  Brush can also be dropped off at the brush pile on 2nd Street (north of 1st Avenue).

Emerald Ash Borer 

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently confirmed the presence of the insect Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) within an ash tree in the Village limits.  According to the DNR, EAB is an invasive, wood boring beetle that kills ash trees by feeding on the inner bark and starving the tree.  More information on the Emerald Ash Borer in Wisconsin can be found at The Village has taken proactive steps to address the situation, include establishing a cost-share program for EAB treatment for residents with ash trees in the street terrace area.  For more information, please click HERE.


New Glarus was established as a Swiss Colony in 1845 and incorporated as a Village in 1901.
